As part of their work for Business Fellows, each team member was asked to write why they were attracted to the Indiana Foodways Alliance Business Fellows project. Interestingly enough, each student had a food story to tell. To read their stories, click on their names.

The overall goal of the Business Fellows team for the Indiana Foodways Alliance is to identify culinary community assets to strengthen local businesses and community economic development efforts.

Some of the team’s responsibilities include creating and adding content to the Indiana Foodways Alliance's Web site, producing broadcast-quality food stories, creating culinary trail maps, developing plans for fundraisers, creating and designing a quarterly newsletter, developing a food-photography resource library, developing a database that lists Indiana-made foods, designing printed materials and more.

Background:
The Business Fellows program at Ball State University consists of a faculty mentor and student team engaged in an on-site, problem-based project with an Indiana business or organization. The goals of a Business Fellows project should be to assist the partner organization in improving services, increasing business, developing new job opportunities, improving quality, or improving competitiveness.

The Business Fellows program is open to all Ball State juniors, seniors and graduate students from all academic majors. Business Fellows are required to commit an average of 10 hours a week to their projects for either a semester or two semesters. The Business Fellows project, coordinated by Ball State’s Career Center and funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., gives students the opportunity to engage in intense applied work experiences during the school year.

Benefits for students include:

  1. Practical experience in their career field
  2. Developing skills employers seek
  3. Increasing marketability
  4. Expanding their network with Indiana employers, alumni, faculty and students
  5. Connecting with job opportunities in Indiana
  6. Earning money while gaining experience
