Jenny Brindley received the Indiana State Main Street Award for her renovation of this beautifully detailed historic storefront diner, a centerpiece of Vevay's revitalization. Sweet potato fries with Jenny's brown sugar dip are highly recommended to go with the wide array of big sandwiches and salads served in the casual eclectic dining room or at the counter. Appetizers and specialty burgers round out the menu. Jenny's Grandmother bakes the irresistibly rich Italian cream and strawberry cakes, muffins and apple dumplings, and Jenny bakes the pies. Visit Vevay's only local internet hotspot, and try the chicken salad, the wraps or the fresh pastries along with your choice from the nice selection of gourmet coffees and teas. Outside seating offers a perfect view of downtown Vevay, adding to the restaurant's small-town atmosphere. The Reuben and the grilled cheese are local favorites here, many of whom gather around the tables to discuss local news and politics. The cafe also features breakfast and lunch specials daily. A visit to the Mercantile is a true trip to a country store, featuring unique locally made artisan, craft and food products. Vevay's old opera house has been restored to house a community shopping experience. You'll find chunk honey, hand-crafted mustards, lip balm, soaps and beeswax ornaments from nearby Satterfield Farms, and salsas and jams from Coyote Creek, along with dulcimers, artworks and needlecraft. Open Mon. - Sat. 10 am - 6 pm, Sun. 11 am - 4 pm.

Get your breadstick fix at Roxano's, a casual neighborhood eatery across from Vevay's Town Hall. Red checked tablecloths are part of the traditional Italian style, along with a menu of salads, hoagies, pastas and pizza, including the local favorite, "The Rox" - with ten must-have gourmet toppings on a hand-tossed crust. The beefy minestrone packs a little heat, and Kip Meyerhoff, owner and local food columnist, makes up the pizza dough and hot yeasty bread sticks served with marinara or cheese sauce fresh every day. The view of the Ohio River is spectacular from the open deck, as you sip your wine and snack from a cheese tray. Shop for local wines and gifts in the pleasant shop, where you can taste test your choice of the three fruit and eight grape varieties of wine crafted on the nearby Demaree family farm. Wild Cherry won Indiana's Concordant Gold award, and "Black Jack", blended from blackberries and apples is a perennial favorite. Located outside of town just 3 minutes from Belterra, the Ridge is open Mon. - Sat. 10 am - 6 pm, Sun. 11 am - 6 pm.

Mike Schenbre is a young entrepreneur whose mission is to make his part of downtown Kokomo a family friendly gathering place for local food, beverages, art and music. The Market Place houses a coffee bar, restaurant, brew pub with stage and an outdoor dining area in the enclosed alley between the historic 1880's Draper building and its neighbor. A changing display of works by local artists cover the exposed brick walls inside. Prince Edward Island blue mussels, catfish, crawfish or chicken baskets are menu favorites, along with hand-cut fries in the Belgian manner that go so well with the European-style artisan ales brewed on the premises. In a nod to Indiana, the menu also offers sweet corn nuggets, fired green beans and hand-cut tenderloins. Local live entertainment every weekend, and special events like beer dinners and open mike nights, are part of the fun. Open Mon. Wed. 8 am-8 pm, Thu.-Sat. 8 am-midnight. $$

Lunch and tea are served in style in this beautiful turreted 1903 brick Victorian house on a corner lot. There is outdoor seating on the wrap-around porch, or in the gazebo, or enjoy your meal in the antique-filled rooms on the first floor. Sandwiches and salads are on the menu, as well as seasonal quiches and homemade soups like corn bisque and strawberry gazpacho. Crepes, cobblers, cakes, bread pudding and tortes are a few of the dessert choices, along scones and sweet bread served for tea. Open Tues.-Fri. 11 am-4 pm, Saturday, Sunday and evenings by reservation only. High Tea served 2-4 pm by reservation only.
