Philip Robinson began his jar collection in 1971 after finding an old Hossier jar on a church property. His collection grew to more than 4,000 fruit jars and 58 kerosene lanterns during the next 37 years.

Robinson came to Muncie in 1988 and stored his large collection a building next to his home, giving birth to the Robinson Jar Museum. Robinson ran the museum from 1988 until his death on May 5, 2008.
