When I first began looking into the Business Fellows program, I wasn’t sure which team would be best for me. I didn’t really have a particular tie to any of the teams. After reading all of the information, the Indiana Foodways Alliance team seemed like a good fit. I am not a culinary specialist, but everyone has some connection to food. Plus, the IFA seemed to be more fitting to my area of study, which is journalism graphics, and what I want to do after graduation from Ball State University.
As far as connections with food, I only have one: Betty Lou’s BBQ Sauce. It’s been in my family for years and was passed down to my mom when my grandmother passed away in 2000. It’s not famous (except in my family), but it amazes me that there is no recipe; it’s all by memorization passed through the generations.
Other than that, I’m not really a food fanatic. I do occasionally watch the Food Network. Sometimes I watch Rachel Ray or "Paula’s Home Cooking," but most of the time I watch "Unwrapped." The program goes behind the scenes of classic American foods and shows how they are made.
Some of my favorite foods include peanut butter, cereal, and most importantly chicken. I could eat chicken twice a day every day and never get tired of it.
As far as my skills go, I like to think that I am a well-rounded designer. I have quite a bit of experience designing print materials from my internship this summer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I’ve worked on logos, brochures, magazine layouts, full page handouts and more. I even redesigned a full-color, 10-page catering menu for the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn. I’ve also worked with The Indianapolis Star to develop ads for the various races held at the Speedway. I work well in teams and believe that collaboration is key when it comes to a task such as Business Fellows.
