Carlson’s isn’t just a place to eat

May 16, 2026 - General - Kristin Lennis

There’s something special when pulling into Carlson’s Drive-In in Michigan City. Maybe it’s the sight of car hops hurrying between parked cars, or the feeling that for just a little while, time slows down.

Since 1947, Carlson’s has been serving generations of families, visitors, and summer travelers. What started as a simple refreshment stand beside Bill and Fran Carlson’s skating rink became one of Indiana’s last remaining drive-in restaurants — and a tradition that still feels wonderfully unchanged.

The homemade root beer is the heart of it all. Brewed fresh daily from the same recipe used for nearly 80 years, it’s poured into tall frosty mugs with that signature creamy foam that instantly takes you back to simpler days.

And then there’s the food! All-beef bun-length hot dogs, homemade chili, BBQ pork, burgers, fries, and all the classic drive-in favorites made to order with care. Today, owners Laura and Chris Imperato continue the traditions that have made Carlson’s a beloved stop for decades: friendly smiles, timeless recipes, and making sure nobody leaves hungry.

Carlson’s isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a place to remember what summers used to feel like.
